By Martha Cliff for MailOnline. A male model has conducted a social experiment to find out what really makes women swipe right on dating apps. The experiment was compiled by male model Ben Southerst, 29, who went on the dating app Tinder with five different looks to find out which got the most matches from potential female partners. Ben, of Earls Court, London , first posted one profile with a picture of how he really looks with a full head of hair and goatee beard – and gauged the reaction over a week. Model Ben Southerst created five Tinder profiles to see what ‘look’ would attract the most women on a dating app. He then made digital alterations to the picture and posted four profiles in successive weeks with slightly different looks – heavy beard, clean shaven, thinning hair and almost completely bald on top. He got matches for the clean shaven look, 85 for the goatee beard and just three for the bald look likened to that of Prince William. Ben found that the receding hairline of the year old future King is ‘too middle aged’ and is likely to attract 95 per cent less responses than profiles of clean shaven men with full heads of hair. His study found women were more forward with men who had a goatee or a heavy beard – but merely because they were more interested in a casual fling than finding true love. He found that a receding hairline left like Prince William’s got him just three matches while a full beard right attracted women who were after a casual fling.

Not according to a study of more than 1 million interactions on a dating website published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Instead, the results indicate that you are probably looking for “deal breakers,” harshly eliminating those who do not live up to your standards. Not long ago, dating produced no data at all. People met their romantic partners through the recommendations of friends, family, or even at real-world locations known as “bars. But that’s changing. Those 30 million people have generated billions of pieces of data.
And because most dating sites ask users to give consent for their data to be used for research purposes, this online courting has played out like an enormous social science experiment, recording people’s moment-by-moment interactions and judgments. A team led by Elizabeth Bruch, a sociologist at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, tapped into this torrent of dating data. Because of a nondisclosure agreement, the researchers can’t reveal the exact source of their subjects, describing it only as an “established, marriage-oriented, subscription-based dating site” from which they randomly selected people, all based in New York City.

Ben Southerst, 29, from Earls Court, London, posted profiles on the dating app with five different looks to find out which one got the most matches. He started by posting a profile with a photo of how he really looks — with a full head of hair and a goatee beard. After gauging the reaction for a week, Southerst then went on to post four more profiles in succession all with slightly different hairstyles including a heavy beard, clean shaven, thinning hair and completely bald.
Interestingly, Southerst found that he received the most matches — to be precise — for the clean-shaven look.

By Carly Stern For Dailymail. An year-old woman created a fake profile to go undercover on Tinder to see what it’s really like for men on dating apps — and she was shocked to discover that it was not as easy as she imagined. YouTuber Alexander Grace teamed up with his friend Sada for the social experiment, providing her with photos of himself to use for her fake Tinder profile. Sada admitted that she thought it would be ‘easy peasy’ to get matches with Alex’s pictures, and assumed she’d be lining up dates in no time — but she was discouraged to get fewer matches than she thought, and even more frustrated to be met with radio silence when she would initiate conversation.
Faux profile: YouTuber Alexander Grace teamed up with his friend Sada for the social experiment and gave her photos of himself to use. When Alex proposed the experiment, he asked Sada to set up a profile as a man seeking women on Tinder. He gave her three of his own photos, and left her to write the bio information, choose who to swipe on, and send messages. Sada said that first impression was that it would be easy to get matches because Alex is attractive, but Alex quickly told her that she was going to find more difficulty than she anticipated.
Sada quickly got to work setting up the profile, explaining to YouTube viewers that she wanted to be ‘very direct and also smooth in the approach. She wrote his bio to read: ‘Hi, my name is Alex. I live and work in Lisbon as a psychologist.
Is Online Dating Different for Men and Women?
O nly eating and sleeping could be said to have a stronger grasp on the steering wheel of our daily behaviour than the thing in our heads that is constantly urging us to find love and have sex. But even an insatiable appetite and overwhelming tiredness are no match for the sudden arrival or breakdown of pure romantic love, or unbridled sexual lust. These are, after all, the states of mind that inspired every one of our direct ancestors to relentlessly pursue love and sex until they succeeded at least once in getting their genes into a new generation.
The advent of online dating, then, must have seemed like an incredible idea. Whereas in the past the pool of single men a woman could potentially meet and attract was limited by who she happened to physically be around during daily life, now it was exponentially larger.

But as he was telling me about the new app he was using, an idea started to form… Because of the way the app is set up, I realized I could test one of my longtime hypotheses, and in the process get some much-needed validation for why online dating sucks and definitively win our debate about whether or not I should sign up. You can also leave a comment on the thing you like, which is actually a great way to start conversations. I was intrigued by the idea of the app, but even more so by the data science opportunity this presented!
We wrapped up our dinner and headed home to make my profile. But alas, a woman can only collect so much data…. How many people liked me, and did they like photos or comments? The first few days of the experiment were a little overwhelming – on the first day collecting data, I entered over 40 suitors! Thankfully, the pace slowed down considerably after that. Does the data support my hypothesis that people on the internet just want a generic woman – can I feel completely validated in my distaste for online dating, or do I need to find a better excuse??!
Oops, it looks like I labeled the same short answer with two different ratings. But I actually removed any profile items with a basic rating of 2 after my first round of edits. What do the numbers look like if we ignore these? But that turned out not to be the case.

Asian men were considered the least desirable race overall, with even Asian women choosing White men over them. While an updated study from showed a significant increase in preference for Asian men among Asian women, Asian males are still rated negatively overall by women of other races. The group posted nearly-identical profiles of an Asian man and a White man on Tinder to find out which one would receive the most matches. Both profiles with White males scored significantly higher than their Asian counterparts despite the only differences being their respective races.

A Los Angeles comedian created the “worst online dating profile ever” to find out just how horrible a woman has to be before the indecent proposals finally stop. In Alli Reed’s case, men were willing to look past a scary stream of red flags — heavy drinking, drug use, lying about pregnancy — to say hello to a pretty face. So she created the worst persona she could think of, presenting herself as an insensitive, greedy year-old who parties too much, knocks cups out of homeless people’s hands and tricks her parents into paying her bills.
The social experiment was to see if men — Reed’s OkCupid profile stated she was only interested in male relationships — would still bite. She got messages in the first 24 hours of introducing the profile, under the username “AaronCarterFan. You’re better than that. There are women and men out there who are smart, and kind, and challenging, and honest, and a lot of other really positive adjectives.
Around the same time, she met her boyfriend on OkCupid — using a real profile. They’re still dating. The fake profile, which was active for about three weeks late last year, has been deleted.
