Historically, bundling was a courtship practice in which, as a part of an ongoing courtship process, a couple spent a night together, usually in bed, dressed or half dressed. During the night, the young couple got to know each other intimately and sexually through various kinds of stimulation and mutual gratification. However, these were supposed to fall short of penetrative sex that could lead to pregnancy.
The custom was practiced with either parental permission or at least tacit knowledge, and took place mostly in the female partner’s home. Most of the surviving evidence for the practice is from eighteenth-century New England.

In conformity with general medieval practice Anabaptists expected to supervise and direct the marriage arrangements for their young people. To a medieval European parent the marriage of a son or daughter without his consent was unthinkable. It was not only a piece of folly but in bad taste or even sinful. This view prevailed in many circles till late in the 19th century.
To the Anabaptists, however, marriage like all other human decisions and behavior must conform to the express teachings of the Holy Scriptures. And because no New Testament instance furnished a pattern for the wooing of a wife, some Anabaptist groups accepted the Old Testament example of Abraham’s selection of a wife for Isaac to show what is the duty of the parent to his son. The best selling fictional stories written all these authors who present “clean” fiction for others to read, are misleading the readers when they don’t tell the whole story.
They write fairy tales, just as fake as Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. Anonymous, I am sure there are many Englishers who would share your surprise at learning this. That’s why it’s so important to be open to the truth-the whole truth–concerning some of the stricter Amish groups. I agree, Karen.
